PART VII. MOSAIC DISPENSATION: THE COVENANTS OF ATONEMENT, REDEMPTION & GRACE – THE PRIESTHOOD
I:5 Mosaic Dispensation: The Priesthood – The Tribe of Levi
When Israel became a Nation the people were divided into twelve Tribes which were the Twelve sons of Jacob whose name was changed into Israel.
One Specific Tribe (the Tribe of Levi) was separated to be a Tribe of Priests for the Nation. Aaron, the brother of Moses was the High Priest. The Priests were responsible for the Teaching of the Law of Moses and the Performance of the Rites, Rituals and Ceremonies of the Tabernacle (Temple).
Exo 28:1 And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.
When the Jewish people came into Possession of the Promised Land and when they Dispersed the Accrued Wealth among the Tribes, the Tribe of Levi (the Levites) were an Exception. This was the Tribe Chosen, by GOD, for the Priesthood and they received GOD as their “Portion”. So, different types of Sacrifices and Offerings were used as Provisions, Supplements and Support for the Tabernacle – the Temple and the Priests. The Priest in turn did all of the Temple Work which Foreshadowed the Works of CHRIST.

When the Jews submitted the Animals to the Temple for the Sacrifice it was given to the Priest who would inspect the “Sacrificial Victim” to assure it was free of Carnal Blemish or Defects and therefore Perfect for the Purpose of the Sacrifice. The animal was then Slaughtered and placed on the Altar to burn it or otherwise Process it according to the type of Sacrifice. The Burnt Offering for Atonement was completely burnt up.
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
All Sacrifices and Offerings were not totally burnt up on the Altar some were “waved or heaved” over the Altar and remained intact for usage by the Family bringing the Offering, the Priests and/or the Community, particularly around the time of Feasts and Holy days.
1Sa 9:13 As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

The High Priest
The High Priest was a Figure that pointed to the High Priest Office of CHRIST. But CHRIST Overshadowed the Office of the Levite High Priest in several ways. By HIS own Merit as the SON OF GOD and by the fact that HE was from the Lineage of Judah, the Royal house of Israel (King) which was not of the Lineage of the Levites (the Priesthood). CHRIST was also a Priest after the Order of Melchisedec, a King who was a King and a Priest of GOD, who lived during the time of Abraham.
Heb 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
National Day of Atonement For Sin
Lev 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
During the Mosaic Dispensation the Levite Priest had to offer a Sacrifice of Atonement for the entire nation of Israel once a year in addition to the usual daily and personal Sacrifices for Atonement for the entire Nation.
On the Day of Atonement, the High Priest had to enter the Holy of Holies. He first had to offer the Atonement Sacrifice for himself for Purification. He had to do this (once a year) because he had to go beyond the “Veil” into the Holy of Holies, the most Sanctified and Holy area of the Temple, which was illegal to enter into without the Cleansing and Purification Blood of the Atonement, being that he was only a “Man of sin” himself in Contrast to CHRIST, as the High Priest of Believers, who entered by Merit of HIS Own Blood into the Holy Place.
Heb 9:7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
Heb 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
This Sacrifice, Atonement Ceremony, was done once a year as an Annual Rite because the blood of animals were inefficient to pay the Ransom for Redemption, nor was it Effectual to Affect a Man’s heart to Sorrow for his sin. The Law of Moses pointed Mankind to the Potential for Perfection. It gave him Commandments to be Perfect but Pointed to Man’s Imperfection. The Law was like a school master teaching Mankind the Commandments to Obey but lacked the Power to Assist Mankind to be Obedient and had not the Power to Acquit him of sin. The Atonement made Mankind Temporarily “Safe” but not “Saved” from the Wrath of Justice.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Inefficacy of the Law of Moses
Heb 7:18 For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.
Heb 7:19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
The Need for Reformation
Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.
Reformation is the Act of Correction or Amendment of Life, Mannerism, or of any thing Vicious or Corrupt. This was a Description of Judaism and the Nation of Israel when CHRIST was sent to Israel by GOD as HIS Prophet and Messiah. They had turned what GOD had given them as a source of Relief from the Oppression of Sin into an Abuse.
The Atonement Sacrifice had lost its true meaning as Israel Descended further into Carnality (sin) and further away from GOD. They no longer Attempted to Live a Holy Life and or seek Absolution from the Error of Sin but deliberately sinned wholesale and then sought Vindication through Following the Letter of the Law for Exoneration or Exemption from the Wrath of GOD. The Judaic Sacrificial System became Corrupted by the Israelites and was no longer Acceptable to GOD.
Isa 1:11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
It was to this Israel that CHRIST came. Many of the people and the Majority of the Priests and Scribes (or the Majority Power) only cared about keeping up Appearances before other men. They did not try to keep the Law of Moses given to him by GOD to Teach to the people nor did they attempt to Abide by HIS Commandments of which the First is to Love GOD.
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
But they did not try to Please GOD or Obey GOD. They went through the Motions of Religion but there was not any True Love for GOD in their Hearts. They had become a Nation of Hypocrites full of Vanity and Stiff-necked except for a Remnant of the People.
Joh 5:42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
Mat 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Mat 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Salvation Through CHRIST
Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
The Law of Moses was only a Figure or Emblem, a Foreshadowing of things to come, which pointed to CHRIST (HIS Body) who would make the Final Sacrifice that would Initiate the Reformation and Create the Way to Allow a Man to live a Straight and Righteous Life through the Covenant and the Covenant Promises which included the Quickening of Man’s Soul, the Restoration to a Spiritual Nature through Spiritual Regeneration and Renewal and the Spiritual Conversion of the Individual by the Indwelling of the HOLY GHOST/SPIRIT.
Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
At the Determinable Time by GOD, (“the Fullness of Time”) The Word of GOD (JESUS CHRIST) was Incarnated; made of a Woman and Made under the Law to Fulfill it. CHRIST came to Redeem Mankind from the Bondage of Sin and Death and to Deliver them from Exile in Ignorance and from Spiritual Darkness.
Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
Gal 4:5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Heb 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
Heb 10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
Heb 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
CHRIST was the last Sacrifice and all things were Consummated in HIM. HE Became a Sacrifice for Believers in the World to Reconcile Believers to GOD and Save them from the Wrath to come to which will Destroy all Unbelievers who have not Embraced CHRIST and the Gospel of the Kingdom of GOD/Heaven.
Eph 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.
Hypocrisy of The Jewish Leaders
Isa 32:6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
Hypocrisy is Simulation; a Feigning to be what one is not; or Dissimulation, a Concealment of one’s Real Character or Motives. Generally, Hypocrisy is the Assuming of a False Appearance of Virtue or Religion; a Deceitful show of a good Character, in Morals or Religion; a Counterfeiting of Religion.
JESUS CHRIST warned HIS Disciples and HIS Followers not to be like the Pharisees and the Scribes from the Temple because they were Hypocrites. They Pretended to “Love GOD” which means to “be Obedient to GOD”.
Luk 12:1 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
Final Admonishment to the Jewish Leaders
CHRIST was sent to Israel to Admonish them regarding their Sins before GOD and to turn the Remnant back to GOD so that they would be Saved.
Joh 5:34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
Only the Remnant of Israel accepted CHRIST. The Jewish Priests, Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees and other Jewish Leaders rejected HIM as a Prophet; a Messenger of GOD; a Priest; King of Israel; and the Son of GOD. The Final Rejection of the Jews
The False Leaders of the Jews not only rejected CHRIST themselves but they cautioned the people if they Accepted CHRIST and Confessed HIM to be the CHRIST, the Messiah, they would be Excommunicated, put out of the Synagogue, meaning they could not attend Religious Services and would have no Temple Rights or be able to Participate in any Religious Festivities, Ceremonies, Rituals or Rites. It was also a way to Ostracize individuals who did not obey them. The Religious Leaders used their Corruptive Power to Coerce and Manipulate the people to Force them to Follow their Will.
Joh 9:22 These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
